Best nano protein skimmers for 10 to 30 gallon reefs

A nano protein skimmer has to be rated for your water volume and has to physically fit where it goes. We rank every skimmer in our catalog by how well its manufacturer-rated volume suits 10, 20 and 30 gallon systems at a medium bioload. Hang-on-back skimmers mount on the rim and fit most tanks with rear clearance; in-chamber skimmers must fit your AIO's rear chamber, which is often only 2 to 3 in front-to-back.

How we ranked: A skimmer suits a size when its maximum rated volume is at least 1.5ร— the water volume (our medium-bioload margin for maker over-claiming and nano over-stocking) and no more than 4ร— it, beyond which it is built for a much larger system. Skimmers that suit more sizes rank higher; ties go to the smallest sufficient rating. Mount type is not part of the rank: check chamber fit for in-chamber units on your tank's page or in the rear-chamber dimensions database.

Chamber fit counts the tracked AIOs whose largest rear chamber, from manufacturer or community measurements, is at least as wide and deep as the skimmer's footprint. Your tank's skimmer chamber may be smaller; see the rear-chamber dimensions database or your tank's page below.

FAQ

Do you need a protein skimmer on a nano reef?

Not always. A lightly stocked nano with regular water changes can often run without one. A skimmer helps more as bioload rises: more fish, heavier feeding, or a tank that is hard to keep up with by water changes alone. If you skip it, plan on consistent water changes.

Hang-on-back or in-chamber skimmer: which is better for a nano?

An in-chamber skimmer sits inside an AIO's rear chamber, out of sight, but only works if its footprint fits that chamber, and many AIO chambers are only about 2 to 3 in front-to-back. A hang-on-back skimmer hangs on the rim, so chamber size doesn't matter, but it needs clearance behind the tank and around any lid, and it is more visible. Check your chamber dimensions first; if nothing fits, a hang-on-back is the usual answer.

What size skimmer do I need for a 20 gallon nano?

Pick one whose maximum rated volume is about 1.5ร— your total water volume for a typical stocking level, so roughly 30 gallons for a 20 gallon system. Go closer to 2ร— (about 40 gallons) for a heavy bioload, or about 1.2ร— for a light one. A skimmer rated more than about 4ร— your volume is built for a much larger system and is likely oversized for a nano.
